40,000 near hits Reported at Victor MIne since Program Launched in 2010

Aug 08, 2019

The De Beers Group Victor Mine in Northern Ontario has racked up an impressive new safety milestone after the 40,000th Near Hit was reported last week.

The Near Hit Reporting program started at Victor Mine in 2010. A Near Hit is a hazard that could have resulted in an injury or incident. Employees are encouraged to not only report the hazard but also take immediate steps to eliminate it. Hazards that cannot be correct by an employee are brought to the attention of mine managers, who develop plans to address the concern.

Since the program started, safety performance has improved each year, with a corresponding reduction in injuries. This has earned Victor Mine two national John T. Ryan Safety Awards (2015, 2016) and two eastern region John T. Ryan Safety Awards (2017, 2018) as well as numerous local individual and team safety awards.

The milestone Near Hit came as the mine marked three consecutive months with no injuries (May, June and July). There have been only three minor injuries at Victor Mine since the start of 2019, with 97% of all work days in 2019 completed without injury thus far.

The 40,000th Near Hit Report was submitted by Darren Thomas, an employee with reclamation contractor Tetra Tech on July 29. He is working on groundwater sampling near the west rock stockpile when he noticed that some sample bottles had leaked. As per company safety policy, he was wearing protective gloves and wasn’t harmed, and took immediate action to replace the bottles.

“I would like to thank Darren and everyone on the Victor Mine team for their continued focus on safety into closure,” said Brian Kilbride, Closure Site Manager. “Without the commitment to safety of everyone working at the mine this would not have been possible, and this accomplishment continues Victor Mine’s outstanding safety legacy from construction, to production and into closure.”

The mine ended production in late May after nearly 11 years of operation. Victor is now in the beginning stages of closure and continuing a reclamation program that has resulted in over one million trees being planted on the site to date.
