Chief Marie-Anne Day Walker-Pelletier has a list with 159 names on it.
Every eligible voter on Okanese First Nation is on that list. Her goal is simple, but ambitious: she wants to see them all checked off as every single band member turns out to vote.
“We need to demonstrate that we mean business,” she said.
Day Walker-Pelletier reminded voters to head to advance polls this past weekend. She had drivers ready to take them there. Her staff will follow up with the stragglers and push them to turn out on Oct. 21. She intends to be at the polling station to ensure they have the right ID — and to vouch for those who don’t.
“We’re going to get out and vote, because that’s the only way we’re going to make change,” she said. “If we sit back and do nothing, nothing is going to happen.”
