Local schools will be participating in Orange Shirt Day to recognize the harm residential schools had on indigenous children.
Students at G.C. Huston Public School in Southampton will be dressing up today (September 27th, 2018).
G.C. Huston Principal Hugh Morrison says the message he wants to convey to students is that ”we’re not going to let that happen again.
Orange Shirt day comes from Phyllis Webstad’s story of having her brand new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.
It’s an annual event that falls on September 30th, but municipalities are organizing their own events to accomodate it falling on a Sunday.
